The First Annual Jensen Family Pentathlon

For Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday Joseph didn't have to work, so we tried to think of something really fun to do.  We knew we didn't want to spend money, so Joseph came up with this fun idea.  We would have the first annual Jensen Family Pentathlon.  He thought up 5 activities we could compete in together.  Joseph, Sophie and I would compete with the winner of each event being awarded 5 points, second place getting 3, and third getting 1.  Avery was a great cheerleader.

Our first event was called "Corner to Corner".  We started in the corner of the basement and had to run up both flights of stairs, get the key off of Sophie's bed in the farthest corner of the opposite end of the house, and then run back down.  To make it fair we took 30 seconds off Sophie's time and Joseph and I also had to run a circle around the middle of the house on the main floor on the way up.  We were a little surprised when Sophie ended up winning the whole thing, even with taking the stairs one at a time on the way down so she didn't fall.  We each ran twice and her time was better by 2 seconds.  Joseph and I were pretty neck and neck.

The second event was to see who could drink water out of their glass fastest.  Joseph filled his up the most and Sophie's the least, but he still easily beat us both, as I knew he would.

The third event was to play a little Hungry Hungry Hippos.  This one Avery did compete in and we did it 3 times and took the total number of balls overall to get the winner.  I won this event.

Our fourth event was playing Go Fish.  Sophie has recently begun playing this all by herself when the 3 of us play.  We taught her the game a few months ago and she loved being on one of our teams, but last week she was daring and agreed to play alone.  Her first game she totally skunked us both.  These games this time weren't as good for her, and I gave him a run for his money, but Joseph won it overall after 3 games.

The last event was playing our DDR.  We just decided that we'd give Sophie 2nd place automatically on this since she really can't do it yet, so Joseph and I were fighting for 1st and 3rd.  Whoever won this would be the winner of the Pentathlon, so there was a lot on the line and it was a fight to the finish.  We each got to pick a song that we'd both do and then we recorded our overall points for each one.  We decided to do one last song at the end and that's what put me over the top as the winner.

So the overall winner of the 1st Jensen Family Pentathlon was...

ME!  I got the coveted key and am reigning queen in our house now.  Until next year when I'm sure I will be dethroned.  Hopefully Avery can join in then, too.  We had a great time and it made for a very fun holiday.

What a blast! Reminds me of our Lamb Family Olympics that included competing in Super Mario Brothers and at the RAC. Best of all, we turned off the phone so no one could bother us. One of our best holidays ever (and least expensive)!
